Earlier this week, Pennsylvania joined ranks with its neighbors Ohio, New Jersey and West Virginia in going maskless, ending a mandate put in place more than a year ago. With that order finally lifted at 12:01 a.m. Monday, the question for health experts now is, “What’s next?”

Dr. Graham Snyder, UPMC’s medical director of infection prevention and hospital epidemiology, warned that the pandemic is not over. “There is still a lot of transmission happening around the world,” Dr. Snyder said. “The pandemic won’t stop in the U.S. until it stops around the world.” As the coronavirus is being transmitted around the world, more variants will emerge, he said. One strain, the delta variant, was recently declared a “variant of concern” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
