According to AAA, over 131 million American adults will be flying this holiday season. And I mean for the Christmas season! That’s a lot of people and a lot of germs. I am not a great flyer. I ALWAYS get sick when I fly somewhere. Having an autoimmune disease makes me more susceptible, which is why I don’t travel often. That said, the healthiest of people can get sick on a plane, and flight attendants are giving us insight to the grossest spots on planes.

Travel and Leisure is giving us some details about the nastiest spots on an airplane. If you’re traveling this holiday season, keep in mind that these are the dirtiest places on a plane, according to flight attendants. Grab your hand sanitizer and have it handy!

  • Safety instruction cards – These are the dirtiest spot on an airplane. Tray tables often get wiped down, but these instruction cards do not.
  • Overhead bin -The overhead compartment is gross since lots of people are touching them and they’re cleaned ‘rarely’.
  • Tray tables – According to a study in 2015, tray tables have almost 8 times more bacteria per square inch than then second-dirtiest place on a plane which is the overhead air vent button. Definitely have some wipes in your bag or purse and wipe the tables down before using.
  • Seat covers – They’re not replaced or cleaned between each flight. UGH! Again, have a antibacterial wipe handy.
  • Bathroom handles – While the toilets are cleaned regularly, the same can’t be said for the locks and door handles. Nasty!
