Health authorities have issued a warning about the overuse of antibiotics as the number of gastro superbug cases in Australia continues to rise. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton last week urged doctors not to over-prescribe antibiotics after a resistant strain of Shigella was identified in Australia.

Shigella infections – also known as Shigellosis – are extremely contagious and caused by an intestinal bacteria that causes dysentery. Dr Sutton said where antibiotics was once the cornerstone for treating all cases of Shigellosis, an increasing number of cases had become resistant to treatment.
